My name is Elizabeth Onofre (AA ’24). I'm here to tell you about my Arrupe College experience.

  • Major: AA in Liberal Arts, Pre-STEM
  • High School: Northside College Prep
  • Involvements: Arrupe Emerging Leaders Program, Co-President of Graphic Novel Club, President of Dreamers and Allies Student Organization, Serving People with a Mission Program, and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK)

How I chose my degree:
I want to pursue a career in technology ethics.

My plans after graduation:
Starting in the fall I would be attending Georgetown University.

Professor a new student should absolutely take a class with:
A new student should absolutely take a philosophy course with Professor Ahumada. She teaches philosophy in a super accessible way that still challenges you at a collegiate level.

Class I never expected to love:
I did not expect to love College Writing II, but it ended up being one of my favorite classes during my time at Arrupe. I loved writing the research paper that you spend the semester working on. I was able to choose my own topic—The Ethics of True Crime—and I loved the research aspect and being able to translate that into a polished paper.

Favorite spot on campus:
Whenever I was swamped with homework or studying, I would dedicate a day to go to the Information Commons in the lakeshore campus. Sitting in one of the couches with an unobstructed view of the lake is such a relaxing way to tackle the stress of school and gave me a good space to focus.

What was your favorite moment during your time at Loyola?
The bonfire and s’mores night during the sophomore retreat at LUREC. The retreat as a whole was really beautiful but making s’mores with my friends and being surrounded by nature was very fun. It allowed me to reflect, laugh and be grateful for my time at Arrupe, the people I’ve met and what I’ve learned

Some surprisingly cool things about Arrupe:
The genuine connections and bonds you make with professors and faculty really surprised me and I loved having that community at Arrupe. I also think it’s very cool that Arrupe has the resources to provide you with personalized support and opportunities. One that made a really big impact for me was OAA coordinating and paying for a trip to a 4-year university that I was accepted to. The transfer process is already very stressful so being able to not worry about paying for travel and accommodations to see the university was very helpful.

What advice do you have for the incoming class?
Step outside of your comfort zone and take the risks of trying things and saying yes to opportunities that you may be hesitant about. Also taking the initiative to find these opportunities at Arrupe is super important because there are so many ways to get involved and explore your interests.
